Talk Around Cake

Today we are going to talk about my two favorite things: God and cake.

Y'all remember Hubby's sister don't you? She has a heart for the Lord like woah. Literally, I've prayed that both my daughters would have a heart for God like hers. She recently returned from a missions trip to NOT Africa. Ok, I know that sounds weird but since the day I met this girl she knew she wanted to be a missionary to Africa. She talked about it all the time, she wrote about it, she signed up to go. But, the Lord had other plans for her (sidenote: all her sponsors were made aware of this change beforehand). She ended up going somewhere she never expected and she ended up loving it.

Boy, Reese was happy to see her when she got home.

When she returned from her trip she said the one thing she wanted more than anything was to have a Talk Around Cake and tell us all about her experience. Now, I personally had never heard of a Talk Around Cake but it is seriously so easy, so delicious, and so fun. There is a fancy schmancy recipe for the cake from scratch and the icing from scratch but ain't nobody got time for that everybody loves this semi-homemade version so that's what I'm gonna give ya.

That ooey-gooey-cake is ugly. I'm just gonna come right out and say it. But the point of this cake isn't how it looks its how it tastes.

Ok, that's not the point either but it tastes really really ridiculously good.

The point of the Talk Around Cake is the experience. Friends or family who haven't seen each other for a while or who have something awesome to talk about gather round with just their spoons and glasses of milk and eat this bad boy straight out of the pan. Everyone talks and eats and talks and eats and seriously, y'all, it's uh-mah-zing.

Talk Around Cake

For Cake:
1 package of Duncan Hines Classic Yellow Cake Mix
1 stick of butter- softened
3 eggs
1 cup of water

For Icing:
3 cups sugar
3/4 cup cocoa
1 1/4 cups of milk
1/4 c of butter
1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla

Preheat Oven to 350. Grease sides and bottom of 9x13 cake pan

Blend cake mix, butter, eggs and water in a large bowl.
 Pour Batter into cake pan.
Bake  23-28 mins

Just before cake is done begin making icing. Combine sugar, cocoa, and milk in a sauce pan. Cook on stove at Med High heat. Bring mix to a boil. Boil until the chocolate goats the bottom of a spoon and when you drop a little in a glass of cold water it will turn into a soft ball (about 1-2 mins after it reaches a full boil)

Take the icing off the heat and add butter and vanilla. Stir to combine. When butter is melted and icing is still hot pour over the cake.

Grab spoons and milk for you and all your friends. Share some stories, laughs, tears?, and straight up deliciousness. You're welcome.

  4. With Sweet Brown making an appearance, I assumed it would be served with a cold POP! Love this idea, and I can't wait to do this with friends!!

  5. Um, yeah, I'll talk around that cake with you any day of the week.

  6. any time you get to welcome a loved one back from being away... WITH an entire cake and no plates is a PARTAYYY!!! Glad to see you guys had some good ol' family QT! Kiddos surely looked like they enjoyed themselves!

  7. Oh man you look great and so does that cake!!

  8. I'd love to hear more about her experience! I had one similar: knew knew knew I'd live in Africa all my life, God kept saying no. I didn't understand at all, until He finally let me go, showed me I dont "know nothin'" and in turn has taken my life to Mexico, a country I once said God would never send me to ;)

  9. Nothing better than eating cake out of the pan and good conversation :) Looks delish!

  10. That's such a cute idea! My friends would look at my like I was crazy if I suggested it! lol

  11. I've never heard of that cake, but I love that idea! How awesome that God knows the plans He has for us, and His ways are higher than ours!

  12. Ummmm.... my friendship-loving sweet tooth thanks you for this idea. LOVE it!!
